The word Chilliwack is the name of a local Indian tribe as well as a geographic description of the area. Originally spelled Chilliwhack, this "Halkomelem" word means "quieter water at the head" or travel by way of a backwater.
The City of Chilliwack is a community of about 80,000 people and is growing rapidly. It'a located 100 kilometres (60 miles) east of Vancouver.

The new Chilliwack Cultural Centre is a $22 million community cultural facility in the heart of downtown Chilliwack. The completed Centre will include an art gallery, a 500+ seat performance theatre, a 150 seat recital hall/rehearsal space/dance studio/meeting space, music instruction rooms, arts and crafts studios and related amenities. It is located on City-owned land at The Landing, adjacent to existing sports and recreation facilities and Prospera Centre.
